Privacy Policy
This privacy policy applies to the Chekhov app for mobile devices, the Chekhov web app, and the chekhov.app website (together hereby referred to as the "Application"), created by David Michael (hereby referred to as "Service Provider") as a Free service. This service is intended for use "AS IS".
Where this policy refers to your mobile device, the same applies to the browser you use when visiting the website or using the web app.
Information Collection and Use
The Application collects information when you use it, and when you download it on a mobile device. This information may include information such as:
- Your device's Internet Protocol address (e.g. IP address)
- The operating system you use on your device
Additionally, the Application collects and stores content that you create while using the Application, including projects, tasks, habits, work sessions, and notes. This content is stored in a secure database in order to provide core app functionality such as persistence and sync across sessions.
The Application does not gather precise information about the location of your mobile device.
The Application does not use Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies to process your data or provide features.
The Service Provider may use the information you provided to contact you from time to time to provide you with important information, required notices and marketing promotions.
For a better experience, while using the Application, the Service Provider may require you to provide us with certain personally identifiable information, including but not limited to email. The information that the Service Provider request will be retained by them and used as described in this privacy policy.
Analytics
The Service Provider uses PostHog to understand how the Application and the chekhov.app website are used, so that they can be improved. PostHog acts as a data processor on the Service Provider's behalf, and the data is stored in the United States.
What is recorded is limited to how the Application is used, such as:
- pages and screens viewed, and how far a page was scrolled;
- which buttons were used, such as the sign-up buttons and App Store links on the website;
- that an account was created.
The content you create is never sent to PostHog. The names and details of your projects, tasks, habits, work sessions and notes are not included, and neither is your name or email address. Analytics events carry only fixed values chosen by the Service Provider, never text that you have typed.
Before you sign in, these records are tied to a randomly generated identifier that lasts only for the current browsing session on the website, and only until the Application is closed on a mobile device. No cookies are used for analytics. Once you sign in, records are tied to your account's internal identifier so that the Service Provider can understand how the Application is used over time.
The information described in this section is not used for advertising, is not used to track you across other websites, and is not sold.
Advertising
The Service Provider advertises Chekhov on Google. If you reach the chekhov.app website by clicking one of those ads, the link carries an identifier for that click, and you will be asked whether Google's advertising cookies may be used to record whether the visit led to an account being created. This measures whether the advertising is worth paying for.
You are asked only if you arrive from one of these ads. Nothing is loaded before you answer, and nothing is loaded at all if you decline; a refusal is remembered by your browser so that you are not asked again. If you allow it, Google's code is loaded on your visits to chekhov.app for up to 30 days, the period within which an ad can be credited with a sign-up, and stops as soon as your sign-up has been recorded. After that you are asked again only if you arrive from another ad. Visitors who have not allowed it get no Google code at all.
If you allow it, Google Ads sets cookies in your browser, and the Service Provider tells Google that the click was followed by a sign-up. Like any request your browser makes, this also sends Google your IP address, details of your browser and device, and the address of the page you are on. Your name, your email address and the content you create are never sent to Google. This is used to measure advertising only: it is not used to show you personalised ads, and the Service Provider does not build advertising audiences from it.
You can withdraw your consent at any time with the button below. This records a refusal in your browser, so Google's code is not loaded again, and deletes the Google Ads cookies set on chekhov.app.
The mobile app measures the same thing in the way Apple's platform requires. It includes Google's Firebase Analytics, so that the Service Provider can tell whether an advert led to an install and an account. Firebase records when the app is installed and first opened, when it is opened and for how long it is used, which screens are viewed, and when an account is created. With these it collects basic technical details: a random identifier for this installation of the app, your device model, operating system and app version, and your approximate location (country or region) from your IP address. Your name, your email address and the content you create are never sent to Firebase. Apple's own SKAdNetwork reporting tells Google which advert an install came from, without identifying you. The app does not ask to track you across other companies' apps and websites, and does not use Apple's advertising identifier. Firebase Analytics starts when the app is first opened; turning analytics off in Settings stops it from then on.
Third Party Access
Only aggregated, anonymized data is periodically transmitted to external services to aid the Service Provider in improving the Application and their service. The Service Provider may share your information with third parties in the ways that are described in this privacy statement.
Please note that the Application utilizes third-party services that have their own Privacy Policy about handling data. Below are the links to the Privacy Policy of the third-party service providers used by the Application:
- Expo
- Auth0
- PostHog
- Google Ads (website visitors who arrive from an ad and allow it — see Advertising above)
- Google Firebase Analytics (the mobile app — see Advertising above)
The Service Provider may disclose User Provided and Automatically Collected Information:
- as required by law, such as to comply with a subpoena, or similar legal process;
- when they believe in good faith that disclosure is necessary to protect their rights, protect your safety or the safety of others, investigate fraud, or respond to a government request;
- with their trusted services providers who work on their behalf, do not have an independent use of the information we disclose to them, and have agreed to adhere to the rules set forth in this privacy statement.
Opt-Out Rights
You can turn off analytics at any time in the Application, under Settings → Privacy. Your choice applies to every device you sign in on, and also stops the Service Provider's own servers recording analytics about your account.
On a mobile device, you can stop all collection of information by the Application easily by uninstalling it. You may use the standard uninstall processes as may be available as part of your mobile device or via the mobile application marketplace or network.
On the website and the web app, closing the browser tab ends the session, and the identifier described above is discarded with it. You can also clear the site's data at any time through your browser's settings, which removes anything Chekhov has stored in your browser.
Data Retention Policy
The Service Provider will retain User Provided data for as long as you use the Application and for a reasonable time thereafter. You may delete your account and all associated data at any time directly within the Application. If you encounter any issues with account deletion, please contact the Service Provider at davidmichael4d@gmail.com and they will respond in a reasonable time.
Children
The Service Provider does not use the Application to knowingly solicit data from or market to children under the age of 13.
The Application does not address anyone under the age of 13. The Service Provider does not knowingly collect personally identifiable information from children under 13 years of age. In the case the Service Provider discover that a child under 13 has provided personal information, the Service Provider will immediately delete this from their servers. If you are a parent or guardian and you are aware that your child has provided us with personal information, please contact the Service Provider (davidmichael4d@gmail.com) so that they will be able to take the necessary actions.
Security
The Service Provider is concerned about safeguarding the confidentiality of your information. The Service Provider provides physical, electronic, and procedural safeguards to protect information the Service Provider processes and maintains.
